2020-08-17cli: add devel make-mime subcommand (#518)Ryan Harper
* cli: add devel make-mime subcommand Cloud-init documents an in-source-tree tool, make-mime.py used to help users create multi-part mime user-data. This tool is not shipped in the cloud-init install and unavailable at runtime. This patch takes tools/make-mime.py and makes the functionality available via the devel subcommand. The primary interface of --attach file:content-type is still present. The cli now adds: -l, --list-types Print out a list of supported content-types -f, --force Ignore errors for unsupported content-types The tool will now raise a RunTime error if the supplied content-type is not supported (or more likely a typo: x-shell-script vs. x-shellscript) * make-mime: write to stderr and exit 1 instead of raising RuntimeError * Update example to match docs * Update docs for make-mime subcommand * Remove tools/make-mime.py; replaced by cloud-init devel make-mime Co-authored-by: Rick Harding <rharding@mitechie.com>
2020-04-29doc/format: reference make-mime.py instead of an inline script (#334)Daniel Watkins
`make-mime.py` is a more recent version of the inline script that this link is replacing.

2019-10-31Add config for ssh-key import and consuming user-dataPavel Zakharov
This patch enables control over SSH public-key import and discarding supplied user-data (both disabled by default). allow-userdata: false ssh: allow_public_ssh_keys: false This feature enables closed appliances to prevent customers from unintentionally breaking the appliance which were not designed for user interaction. The downstream change for this is here: https://github.com/delphix/cloud-init/pull/4

2018-09-11user-data: jinja template to render instance-data.json in cloud-configChad Smith
Allow users to provide '## template: jinja' as the first line or their #cloud-config or custom script user-data parts. When this header exists, the cloud-config or script will be rendered as a jinja template. All instance metadata keys and values present in /run/cloud-init/instance-data.json will be available as jinja variables for the template. This means any cloud-config module or script can reference any standardized instance data in templates and scripts. Additionally, any standardized instance-data.json keys scoped below a '<v#>' key will be promoted as a top-level key for ease of reference in templates. This means that '{{ local_hostname }}' is the same as using the latest '{{ v#.local_hostname }}'. Since instance-data is written to /run/cloud-init/instance-data.json, make sure it is persisted across reboots when the cached datasource opject is reloaded. LP: #1791781

2017-08-25doc: Explain error behavior in user data include file format.Jason Butz
Update user data 'include file' format documentation to explain the behavior that occurs when an error occurs while reading a file.
2017-01-17doc: Fix typos and clarify some aspects of the part-handlerErik M. Bray
The existing documentation referred to a handle_type method when it really should be handle_part. It also referred to 'methods' when it really should say 'functions' to be clear (while it's true the built-in handlers are classes with methods of these names, in this context we mean module-level functions). Also clarified that a part-handler should come before the parts that it handles, and can override built-in handlers.
2016-11-22Doc: various documentation fixesSean Bright
Several various minor fixes for the readthedocs documentation.
2016-11-10doc: make the RST files consistently formated and other improvements.Scott Moser
The biggest things here are: * move doc/sources/*/README.rst to doc/rtd/topics/datasources This gives each datasource a page in the rtd docs, which make it easier to read. * consistently use the same header style throughout. As suggested at http://thomas-cokelaer.info/tutorials/sphinx/rest_syntax.html use: # with overline, for parts * with overline, for chapters =, for sections -, for subsections ^, for subsubsections “, for paragraphs Also, move and re-format vendor-data documentation to rtd.
2016-09-30Improve module documentation and doc cleanup.Wesley Wiedenmeier
This adds lots of config module documentation in a standard format. It will greatly improve the content at readthedocs. Additionally: * Add a 'doc' env to tox.ini * Changed default highlight language for sphinx conf from python to yaml most examples in documentation are yaml configs * Updated datasource examples to highlight sh code properly
2013-01-24Add docs which can be used on readthedocs.orgJoshua Harlow
Include a new set of docs that can be used to create a readthedocs.org site, which includes examples, directory layout, capabilities and such. This in-code documentation then allows for readthedocs.org to create a website directly from the cloud-init codebase.
