This attempts to standardize unit test file location under test/unittests/
such that any source file located at cloudinit/path/to/file.py may have a
corresponding unit test file at test/unittests/path/to/test_file.py.
Noteworthy Comments:
====================
Four different duplicate test files existed:
test_{gpg,util,cc_mounts,cc_resolv_conf}.py
Each of these duplicate file pairs has been merged together. This is a
break in git history for these files.
The test suite appears to have a dependency on test order. Changing test
order causes some tests to fail. This should be rectified, but for now
some tests have been modified in
tests/unittests/config/test_set_passwords.py.
A helper class name starts with "Test" which causes pytest to try
executing it as a test case, which then throws warnings "due to Class
having __init__()". Silence by changing the name of the class.
# helpers.py is imported in many test files, import paths change
cloudinit/tests/helpers.py -> tests/unittests/helpers.py
# Move directories:
cloudinit/distros/tests -> tests/unittests/distros
cloudinit/cmd/devel/tests -> tests/unittests/cmd/devel
cloudinit/cmd/tests -> tests/unittests/cmd/
cloudinit/sources/helpers/tests -> tests/unittests/sources/helpers
cloudinit/sources/tests -> tests/unittests/sources
cloudinit/net/tests -> tests/unittests/net
cloudinit/config/tests -> tests/unittests/config
cloudinit/analyze/tests/ -> tests/unittests/analyze/
# Standardize tests already in tests/unittests/
test_datasource -> sources
test_distros -> distros
test_vmware -> sources/vmware
test_handler -> config # this contains cloudconfig module tests
test_runs -> runs

testing: monkeypatch system_info call in unit tests
system_info can make calls that read or write from the filesystem, which
should require special mocking. It is also decorated with 'lru_cache',
which means test authors often don't realize they need to be mocking.
Also, we don't actually want the results from the user's local
machine, so monkeypatching it across all tests should be reasonable.
Additionally, moved some of 'system_info` into a helper function to
reduce the surface area of the monkeypatch, added tests for the new
function (and fixed a bug as a result), and removed related mocks that
should be no longer needed.

tox: bump the pinned flake8 and pylint version
* pylint: fix W1406 (redundant-u-string-prefix)
The u prefix for strings is no longer necessary in Python >=3.0.
* pylint: disable W1514 (unspecified-encoding)
From https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0597/ (Python 3.10):
The new warning stems form https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0597,
which says:
Developers using macOS or Linux may forget that the default encoding
is not always UTF-8. [...] Even Python experts may assume that the
default encoding is UTF-8. This creates bugs that only happen on Windows.
The warning could be fixed by always specifying encoding='utf-8',
however we should be careful to not break environments which are not
utf-8 (or explicitly state that only utf-8 is supported). Let's silence
the warning for now.
* _quick_read_instance_id: cover the case where load_yaml() returns None
Spotted by pylint:
- E1135 (unsupported-membership-test)
- E1136 (unsubscriptable-object)

`get_interfaces` is used to in two ways, broadly: firstly, to determine
the available interfaces when converting cloud network configuration
formats to cloud-init's network configuration formats; and, secondly, to
ensure that any interfaces which are specified in network configuration
are (a) available, and (b) named correctly. The first of these is
unaffected by this commit, as no clouds support Open vSwitch
configuration in their network configuration formats.
For the second, we check that MAC addresses of physical devices are
unique. In some OVS configurations, there are OVS-created devices which
have duplicate MAC addresses, either with each other or with physical
devices. As these interfaces are created by OVS, we can be confident
that (a) they will be available when appropriate, and (b) that OVS will
name them correctly. As such, this commit excludes any OVS-internal
interfaces from the set of interfaces returned by `get_interfaces`.

Router advertisements are required for the default route
to be set up, thus accept_ra should be enabled for
dhcpv6-stateful.
sysconf: IPV6_FORCE_ACCEPT_RA controls accept_ra sysctl.
eni: mode static and mode dhcp 'accept_ra' controls sysctl.
Add 'accept-ra: true|false' parameter to config v1 and
v2. When True: accept_ra is set to '1'. When False:
accept_ra is set to '0'. When not defined in config the
value is left to the operating system default.
This change also extend the IPv6 support to distinguish
between slaac and dhcpv6-stateless. SLAAC is autoconfig
without any options from DHCP, while stateless auto-configures
the address and the uses DHCP for other options.

When ConfigDrive discovers the source path /config-drive, subplatform
is now reports 'config-drive'
LP: #1849731
|
|
Openstack subnets can be configured to use SLAAC by setting
ipv6_address_mode=dhcpv6-stateless. When this is the case
the sysconfig interface configuration should use
IPV6_AUTOCONF=yes and not set DHCPV6C=yes.
This change sets the subnets type property to the full
network['type'] from openstack metadata.
cloudinit/net/sysconfig.py and cloudinit/net/eni.py
are updated to support new subnet types:
- 'ipv6_dhcpv6-stateless' => IPV6_AUTOCONF=yes
- 'ipv6_dhcpv6-stateful' => DHCPV6C=yes
Type 'dhcp6' in sysconfig is kept for backward compatibility
with any implementations that set subnet_type == 'dhcp6'.

Some deployments of OpenStack expose link types to the guest which
cloud-init doesn't recognise. These will almost always be physical, so
we can operate more robustly if we assume that they are (whilst warning
the user that we're seeing something unexpected).

pylint now complains about assignment of None from a
return of a function call. This does not account for subclassing
so we resolve this issue by removing the assignment in the unittest.

Add the following instance-data.json standardized keys:
* v1._beta_keys: List any v1 keys in beta development,
e.g. ['subplatform'].
* v1.public_ssh_keys: List of any cloud-provided ssh keys for the
instance.
* v1.platform: String representing the cloud platform api supporting the
datasource. For example: 'ec2' for aws, aliyun and brightbox cloud
names.
* v1.subplatform: String with more details about the source of the
metadata consumed. For example, metadata uri, config drive device path
or seed directory.
To support the new platform and subplatform standardized instance-data,
DataSource and its subclasses grew platform and subplatform attributes.
The platform attribute defaults to the lowercase string datasource name at
self.dsname. This method is overridden in NoCloud, Ec2 and ConfigDrive
datasources.
The subplatform attribute calls a _get_subplatform method which will
return a string containing a simple slug for subplatform type such as
metadata, seed-dir or config-drive followed by a detailed uri, device or
directory path where the datasource consumed its configuration.
As part of this work, DatasourceEC2 methods _get_data and _crawl_metadata
have been refactored for a few reasons:
- crawl_metadata is now a read-only operation, persisting no attributes on
the datasource instance and returns a dictionary of consumed metadata.
- crawl_metadata now closely represents the raw stucture of the ec2
metadata consumed, so that end-users can leverage public ec2 metadata
documentation where possible.
- crawl_metadata adds a '_metadata_api_version' key to the crawled
ds.metadata to advertise what version of EC2's api was consumed by
cloud-init.
- _get_data now does all the processing of crawl_metadata and saves
datasource instance attributes userdata_raw, metadata etc.
Additional drive-bys:
* unit test rework for test_altcloud and test_azure to simplify mocks
and make use of existing util and test_helpers functions.

ignored when provided in OpenStack network_config.json.

In many cases, cloud-init uses 'util.subp' to run a subprocess.
This is not really desirable in our unit tests as it makes the tests
dependent upon existance of those utilities.
The change here is to modify the base test case class (CiTestCase) to
raise exception any time subp is called. Then, fix all callers.
For cases where subp is necessary or actually desired, we can use it
via
a.) context hander CiTestCase.allow_subp(value)
b.) class level self.allowed_subp = value
Both cases the value is a list of acceptable executable names that
will be called (essentially argv[0]).
Some cleanups in AltCloud were done as the code was being updated.

Multiple distros use sysconfig format but have different content
and paths to certain files. Update distros to specify these
template paths in their renderer_configs dictionary.

New mkfs.vfat and fatlabel tools included in the dosfsutils package no
longer support creating vfat disks with lowercase labels. They silently
default to an all uppercase label eg CONFIG-2 instead of config-2. This
change makes cloud-init handle either upper or lower case.

Make sure that some temporary files used by the config drive tests get
cleaned up properly.

Each DataSource subclass must define its own get_data method. This branch
formalizes our DataSource class to require that subclasses define an
explicit dsname for sourcing cloud-config datasource configuration.
Subclasses must also override the _get_data method or a
NotImplementedError is raised.
The branch also writes /run/cloud-init/instance-data.json. This file
contains all meta-data, user-data and vendor-data and a standardized set
of metadata keys in a json blob which other utilities with root-access
could make use of. Because some meta-data or user-data is potentially
sensitive the file is only readable by root.
Generally most metadata content types should be json serializable. If
specific keys or values are not serializable, those specific values will
be base64encoded and the key path will be listed under the top-level key
'base64-encoded-keys' in instance-data.json. If json writing fails due to
other TypeErrors or UnicodeDecodeErrors, a warning log will be emitted to
/var/log/cloud-init.log and no instance-data.json will be created.

This moves the base test case classes into into cloudinit/tests and
updates all the corresponding imports.

render_network_state should default to rendering on /.
The changes here just make it so render_network_state does not
require a target, but defaults to None, and uses target_path
to handle that.

This has been a recurring ask and we had initially just made the change to
the cloud-init 2.0 codebase. As the current thinking is we'll just
continue to enhance the current codebase, its desirable to relicense to
match what we'd intended as part of the 2.0 plan here.
- put a brief description of license in LICENSE file
- put full license versions in LICENSE-GPLv3 and LICENSE-Apache2.0
- simplify the per-file header to reference LICENSE
- tox: ignore H102 (Apache License Header check)
Add license header to files that ship.
Reformat headers, make sure everything has vi: at end of file.
Non-shipping files do not need the copyright header,
but at the moment tests/ have it.

Treat null type as yet another physical type, seen in real-world
openstack cloud.
Also, support the case where network_data.json provides mac addresses
in upper case. Rackspace public cloud currently does that.

The OpenStack network_data.json does not provide a name for bond links.
This change makes it so a dummy one is generated and used instead
to satisfy cloud-init which does require one.
In order to write the correct link (underlying 'link' names)
for the bonds, we maintain a list of info by ids so we can easily
get the right device name.
Also:
* add a vlan test case that similarly references an id rather than name.
* make bond interfaces auto

This just adds 'tap' to the list of types that are understood to
be physical or virtual network devices. Openstack basically exposes
the type of the host device through.

'id' on a link in the openstack spec should be "Generic, generated ID".
current implementation was to use the host's name for the host
side nic. Which provided names like 'tap-adfasdffd'.
We do not want to name devices like that as its quite unexpected
and non user friendly. So here we use the system name for any
nic that is present, but then require that the nics found also
be present at the time of rendering.
The end result is that if the system boots with net.ifnames=0
then it will get 'eth0' like names. and if it boots without net.ifnames
then it will get enp0s1 like names.

UrlResponse: biggest change... make readurl return bytes, making user
know what to do with it.
util: add load_tfile_or_url for loading text file or url
as read_file_or_url now returns bytes
ec2_utils: all meta-data is text, remove non-obvious string translations
DigitalOcean: adjust for ec2_utils
DataSourceGCE, DataSourceMAAS: user-data is binary other fields are text.
openstack.py: read paths without decoding to text. This is ok as paths
other than user-data are json, and load_json will handle
load_file still returns text, and that is what most things use.

Openstack has a unique derivative datasource
that is gaining usage. Previously the config
drive datasource provided part of this functionality
as well as the ec2 datasource, but since new
functionality is being added to openstack is
seems benefical to combine the used parts into
one datasource just made for handling openstack
deployments.
This patch factors out the common logic shared
between the config drive and the openstack
metadata datasource and places that in a shared
helper file and then creates a new openstack
datasource that readers from the openstack metadata
service and refactors the config drive datasource
to use this common logic.

This patch fixes issues in Fedora 18 (and upcoming RHEL 7) which are
present due to their use of systemd:
- store locale configuration in /etc/locale.conf
- store hostname in /etc/hostname
- use a symlink for /etc/localtime (prior code would set the timezone
but corrupt data in /usr/share/zoneinfo due to presence of symlink)
It also contains fixes for issues unrelated to systemd adoption:
- explicitly scan /dev/sr0 with blkid in order to get the optical drive
in the blkid cache. This prevents an issue on systems running 2.6
kernels (such as RHEL 6) in which config disks on some devices won't
be detected unless the device has previously been queried.
(For reference, see https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/1770241/)
- append a newline when rewriting sysconfig files, as this is customary
text configuration file formatting and is expected by some parsers
(such as the ifcfg-rh plugin for NetworkManager)

previously, there was an attempt in the config drive source to limit
the source device to a "full block device" rather than a partition.
This was done by a simplistic approach of checking that the last
character of the name was not a number. That was filtering out
CD-rom devices (sr0).
Now, we have a bit more sophisticated approach to that same problem.
We filter out block devices that have a 'partition' entry in
/sys/class/block/DEVICE_NAME/partition .
